Official Naming: Jao Tsung-I Academy

On 30 December 2009, Mr Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the HKSAR Government, officially named the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital as Jao Tsung-I Academy. “Professor Jao is a world-renowned scholar highly regarded for his talents. He has contributed to virtually every field of humanities, including archaeology, history, literature, calligraphy, poetry and fine arts for more than 70 years. He is the pride and honour of Hong Kong’s people. The naming of the Academy is to pay tribute to him on behalf of the people of Hong Kong and to bestow a permanent honour on him.”

Mr Tsang continues: “The Lai Chi Kok hospital project aims to provide an urban oasis for visitors to learn more about Chinese culture and history, an objective that ties in with Professor Jao’s education work in the fields of art and culture over the years. The naming of the premises after him showcases Hong Kong people’s admiration for him and simultaneously highlights our commitment to conserve and revitalise historic buildings for the benefit of the community.”
