The Golden Age of Cinema

Well-known Hong Kong painter Mr. Wong Kum is known for his outstanding figure paintings. His oil paintings, watercolours, and sketches show solid basic skills which the view and bring appreciation to the viewer. Mr. Huang’s paintings were seen on the outdoor posters, posters in the golden age of Hong Kong films in the 1970s and 1980s,, and also in the design of stamps issued by the government. For this year’s Flower Festival, JTIA has selected the works of Mr. Wong to enable the audience to see how film posters can also be art as well as helping them recall the glory of Hong Kong movies from another perspective.

Lovers Say it with Flowers

Plants experience four seasons over the course of a year, and a relationship is no, as there changes and emotional ups and downs over time.

We have collected the emotions felt at different stages of a romance, and hung words and quotations around our complex and invite you to come, see, and feel these “blooms”.

A woodwind quintet will perform film and television theme songs live so that the audience will get a deeper sense of TV and movie music.

Workshops

 

  • Flower Festival Outdoor Sketching

It is rare to see in the city a mountainside spread with pink bauhinia amidst distinguished old buildings. In addition to taking photographs of the beauty of nature with a camera, you can also try to describe nature and the architecture of JTIA in a watercolor sketch, and retain this unique scenery and bring a little freehand expression to a busy life.

Instructor: Jacky Lui

About the Instructor: Jacky Lui graduated from the Hong Kong Design Institute and studied at the Oil Painting Department of the Chinese Western Academy of Fine Arts, and has a Diploma in Western Art and a Certificate in Chinese Ink Painting from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has been president of the Academy of Arts in 2004 and 2005 and is a member of the China Gongbi Painting Association. He has participated in many overseas and local painting and calligraphy competitions and has won several awards. His works have been exhibited and published in China, Japan, France, and the United States. He is currently teaching painting in several kindergartens and primary school painting classes.

  • Chinese Traditional Food Workshop: Spring Rolls

  • The Joy of Life Workshop: “Happiness” Leaf Painting 2.0

Jao Tsung-I Academy is surrounded by many different kinds of leaves and flowers that undergo a life cycle of ageing, yellowing, and falling. Participants will be able to understand the diversity of the natural ecology at JTIA under the guidance of the instructor. They can also collect leaves, dried flowers, and dried seeds around the complex and use them as the medium of creation. These paintings without frames will be made with branches to show the continuing vitality of these fallen leaves.

Competition

Every spring, the old brick buildings of Jao Tsung-I Academy is covered with flowers. This year a photography contest will be held during the Flower Festival with the theme of “The Love of Flowers”. We invite you to take part in this photography contest, using your lens to take pictures of JTIA and the love and beauty of flowers.

“Literary Sketching @ JTIA series

Literary sketching is the expression of emotion and the carrier of memory. A spark is always lit when literature encounters historical buildings. Jao Tsung-I Academy has witnessed over 100 years of Hong Kong history. The past used to engrave the building. It is a leisurely experience to write literature in the flower sea surrounded by red bricks. JTIA has specially invited local Hong Kong writers, Leung Wai Lok, Tsui Cheuk Yin, and Li Ho Him to organize three consecutive literary sketching activities to write literary sketches of the historical buildings of JTIA.
