Gospel Music originated in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Cargo ships sailing to the Americas were filled with people from Africa. These black Africans, who were to be sold as slaves, expressed their feelings for their homeland and their fear of being slaves through song. They were later attracted by the doctrine of Christian equality and praised God with their distinctive black music. Their singing combined with their unique surging rhythms and harmonies gradually formed what we know today as gospel music.

Jao Tsung-I Academy will present a different kind of music, “The Sound of Souls” following on from its Jazz Up Kowloon concerts.  Hong Kong Gospel Choir, the first Chinese Gospel Music Choir to be formed in Hong Kong, will bring to us the uplifting rhythms and spiritual sounds of black gospel music.
